Routes into social work

Whether you're not yet qualified or qualified but not been working for a while, there are a number of routes into (or back into) social work, if you are looking to take that step.

We will support you, subject to passing to join us in a permanent social work role.

Step Up

This is a 14-month work-based programme leading to a postgraduate diploma in social work. You need this to register and practise as a social worker. To apply, you must have one of the following in any discipline except social work from a UK higher education institution (or an approved overseas equivalent):

  • a minimum 2:2 level 6 degree qualification, for example, a degree with honours or a graduate certificate
  • a minimum 2:2 honours degree plus a higher degree (level 7 or above), for example, a master’s degree or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education

Apprenticeships

Enfield’s apprenticeship scheme is an excellent place to start your career or develop new skills. We offer a quality social work apprenticeship programme that allows you to “earn while you learn”. It is a three-year work-based training programme leading to a degree in social work. You will gain experience in a variety of roles across a range of service. To get more information on this programme, email centreofexcellence@enfield.gov.uk.

Returning to work

If you are already qualified but have not been working for a while, we can help you get back into social work. There are limited places on this free government programme with applications taken every 2 years. You will receive high quality training that can be provided over a flexible period, involving:

  • hands-on work placements
  • comprehensive coaching and mentoring
  • dedicated interview preparation
  • getting to know the skills you’ll need to get back into work

We understand that this will naturally be a daunting time if you find yourself in this position. However, this programme recognises that alongside the knowledge and experience, it is very much about gaining confidence in yourself to be on the frontline once again.
