Details
The protection of in planet’s climate is one of the most pressing issues of our time. In the borough, we declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 and developed a Climate Action Plan in 2020, laying out our vision for a carbon neutral council by 2030 and a carbon neutral borough by 2040. This vision was supported by over a hundred actions in seven areas (buildings, energy, travel, waste, natural environment, finance and influencing others).
The Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Ergin Erbil, said:
“The Council is conscious of the part it plays in local and national carbon reductions. We are at a point where reducing carbon pollution that effects our climate can be a product of saving money on energy bills, insulating our buildings, providing more transport choices and investing in our infrastructure. We are confident that working together is the best way to achieve our shared goals of rapid carbon reductions.”
As part of enhancing the Climate Action Plan (pdf) every two years, we sought the views of residents, students, businesses and community groups to find out the best ways of reaching the carbon neutral borough target of 2040.
