Daily Mile
Schools in Enfield are strongly encouraged to sign up to The Daily Mile, which aims to improve the physical, emotional and social health and wellbeing of children. The initiative encourages primary school children to run for 15 minutes every day, and has measurable positive health outcomes in physical activity, sedentary behaviour, fitness and body composition of primary school children.
Enfield Council is offering all primary schools in Enfield support from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation to help establish The Daily Mile in their school. The purpose of involving Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is to support those teachers who don’t feel confident enough to deliver The Daily Mile, and to help them take the first steps towards bringing children outside to run.
If you are interested in support from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, please contact sally.porter@enfield.gov.uk.
10 minute shake up
The NHS's 10 Minute Shake Up campaign is an initiative aimed at promoting physical activity and healthy habits in children. The campaign encourages children to participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day through short, fun activities that can be completed in 10 minutes or less. These activities are designed to be accessible and engaging for children of all ages and abilities, and can be completed alone or with friends.
The campaign is supported by several popular children's brands and characters, including Disney, Pixar, and Marvel, who have provided resources and activities featuring their iconic characters. These resources include online games, quizzes, and challenges that promote physical activity and healthy habits, as well as printable activity sheets that can be completed offline.
The campaign also provides resources for parents and teachers, including information on the benefits of physical activity for children, tips for encouraging children to be more active, and suggestions for incorporating physical activity into daily routines. The resources emphasize the importance of making physical activity fun and engaging for children, and encourage parents and teachers to model healthy habits themselves.

School streets Enfield
School Streets establish safer surroundings around educational institutions for both children and the local community. A 'School Street' denotes an area that is transformed into a zone exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists, located adjacent to a school. These designated areas are operational solely on weekdays during the school term, specifically during designated drop-off (morning) and pick-up (afternoon) hours. During these times, the roads are accessible only to individuals walking, using scooters, cycling, and those exempt from the closure regulations.
The management of School Streets can take two approaches. One involves manual operation by volunteers who place physical gates or barriers across the road during closure times. Additionally, designated closure points are established. The second method involves an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera system. In certain instances, supplementary measures like implementing one-way streets may be incorporated to reinforce the effectiveness of the initiative.
A recent study conducted by Transport for London revealed that School Streets led to a reduction of nitrogen dioxide levels during drop-off times by as much as 23%. Moreover, 18% of parents indicated a decrease in their frequency of driving to school when their child attended an educational institution participating in the School Street program.
