Enfield Council has become the latest London local authority to sign UNISON’s Anti-Racism Charter.
By signing the charter, the Council has joined several other local authorities in London who are dedicated to actively removing barriers to eradicate racism within the workplace.
The charter was signed yesterday (10 April) at the Civic Centre by the Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Nesil Caliskan and Chief Executive, Ian Davis.
The Council has pledged to enhance its existing initiatives in support of the charter.
The commitments include tackling racism in the public sector, having a clear and visible race equality policy, and a programme of anti-racism initiatives such as training for all staff.
The charter also includes promoting a diverse workforce, addressing the impact of racism on staff wellbeing, and regularly reviewing strategies to improve racial equality, diversity and inclusion so the Council can reflect the community it serves.
Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said: “I am pleased to have signed the Anti-Racism Charter, as it supports and demonstrates our commitment to championing a racially diverse workforce.
“As part our pledge in signing the charter, we will review our strategies to improve racial equality and inclusion and will continue to challenge racism whenever it arises.”
UNISON London regional secretary, Jo Galloway, said: “It’s fantastic to see Enfield Council making this commitment and signing UNISON’s anti-racism charter. We need more employers following their lead and pledging to tackle racial inequality at work.
“We look forward to working in partnership with Enfield Council in implementing it.”
UNISON is the largest union in Greater London, with more than 130,000 members across the city region.
