Enfield Council’s Pavilion on the Green has officially kicked off a summer programme of arts, culture and workshops, following its launch in Edmonton on 29 June.
The celebration at the Pavilion, which was co-designed by the local community with local architect Fisher Cheng, is the start of a series of cultural and community activities which will take place on The Green throughout the Summer, and which will include the Untold Edmonton Festival, which celebrates and explores Edmonton’s rich and diverse history, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Pavilion is one of five culture places being delivered by Enfield Council’s Journeys and Places team in town centres across the borough to support and invest in our vibrant high streets, host arts, culture and community events and provide jobs and training opportunities.
Enfield Council has already delivered the fully refurbished arts hub Dugdale Arts Centre in Enfield Town; the Living Room Library which is a fully flexible community space and modern library in Upper Edmonton; and an artists’ residency programme and exhibition space Arbeit Studios in Palmers Green which sits alongside Devonshire Square. Plans for Devonshire Square to become a permanent cultural and community space are progressing. A range of early cultural interventions are planned for Southgate as part of the development of a longer-term vision for the town centre.
Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for environment, culture and public spaces, Cllr Chinelo Anyanwu, said: “The Pavilion on the Green will be a showcase for the extraordinary social and cultural diversity of Edmonton and I look forward to the jam-packed summer programme, thanks to the active involvement of the community.
“This initiative forms part of a longer-term ambition to provide culture places in all of our town centres and to provide activities that focus on local culture, learning and wellbeing that are open to all.”
Future plans for The Green’s development include improvements to the open space and the potential restoration of the railway arches, if funding is secured.
