Black History Month will be celebrated in Enfield with an incredible line up of DJs, singers, makers and creators presenting events under the theme ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.
Enfield Council’s culture team has put together a fully inclusive programme at Dugdale Art Centre (DAC) including workshops and performances, collaborating with many partners including the Enfield Caribbean Association, Nexus, Reggae Choir, Enfield's Black Heritage Hub among others.
Kicking off on Friday 27 September, DAC’s Chef Dom will host a launch party in collaboration with the local community and featuring an open mic night.
One of the season’s highlights will be the Pure Vibes All Dayer, an exciting, family-friendly celebration of reggae music and culture, presented by the Reggae Choir and DAC on 26 October. From 10am to 11pm, visitors will be able to experience a jam-packed day filled with live music, dance, cooking tutorials and authentic Caribbean food, storytelling, films, and fun games for the whole family. Topping off the day, Reggae Choir will perform their soulful harmonies.
In a Black History Month first for the borough, the Enfield Caribbean Association has put together a collaborative evening of workshops on 24 October for young people to learn from successful entrepreneurs. Writers, musicians, artists, filmmakers and other creatives will form a melting pot of ideas and discussions to celebrate black creativity.
Elsewhere, UK garage supremo and radio host DJ Spoony will share songs that matter to him and the importance of them in his history.
Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Culture and Public Spaces, Cllr Chinelo Anyanwu, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to come together, to learn and honour the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Black communities, both here in Enfield and beyond.
