The owner of a supermarket in Enfield has been fined for breaching food regulations, following investigations by Enfield Council.

Routine food hygiene inspections by the Council’s Environmental Health Food Safety Team on 20 April 2023, 1 November 2023 and 9 November 2023 found a rat infestation, chewed food by rodents, a dead rat and unclean premises.

On 12 September 2024, Nue Innovations Limited, who own and operate Nue Supermarket at 282 High Street, Enfield EN3 4HF and its Director Nnambi Ugochukwu Ekwem of Waltham Cross, pleaded guilty to food hygiene and pest control offences at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court.

The supermarket voluntarily closed following three visits by Enfield Council’s Environmental Health Food Safety Team.

Nnambi Ugochukwu Ekwem received a Conditional Discharge for six months, but if similar issues arise with his business and he appears before a court in the next six months, the Conditional Discharge will be considered.

The Company and the Director were ordered to pay total costs of £4,026 and fined £938.

The offences that led to the prosecution relate to pests on the premises, poor cleaning to equipment and premises, food not protected from contamination and not having adequate procedures to control pests.

The offences are contrary to Regulation 19 and 20 of the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations, 2013.
