Gritting vehicles have been loaded with salt at Enfield Council’s Morson Road depot, in readiness for the cold winter months ahead.
The large, bright yellow vehicles are ready to spread grit on the borough’s carriageways, footways and public highways to ensure they are safe for people travelling around the borough.
One thousand, one hundred tonnes of gritting salt is in stock in readiness for the gritting season from November to 31 March 2025, in line with the Council’s Winter Maintenance Plan.
The Council has invested in the most advanced routing and salt spreading software combined with a satellite navigation system that will be used to enable operatives to accurately plan gritting routes efficiently.
The software also records the locations gritted and the times and dates, including how much grit is spread to ensure there is no wastage.
The gritting trucks are also fitted with snow ploughs when required for the removal of snow from the highway network under extreme conditions.
Cabinet Member for Transport and Waste at Enfield Council, Cllr Rick Jewell, visited the Morson Road depot this week to find how Enfield’s winter plan will be utilised and actioned.
Cllr Rick Jewell said: “Every year, we prepare months in advance for the cold weather and to ensure our operatives and fleet of gritters are ready to go out into the borough at the right times while continually consulting with the Met Office weather forecasts.
“Every time one of our fleet of gritters leaves the depot, it spreads grit on approximately 129 miles of the borough’s network to help keep residents, drivers and pedestrians safe.”
The priority areas for gritting are carriageways which include principal roads, main commuter routes, all bus routes, emergency services facilities and access to main industrial areas.
Weather conditions can change at any time, so the Council monitors the weather forecast 24-hours a day.
