A new service to help residents quit smoking was launched in Enfield on national No Smoking Day (12 March).
‘SmokeFree Enfield’ is a local service from Solutions4Health who provide innovative and sustainable lifestyle and clinical services that improve healthcare and was commissioned by Enfield Council.
The comprehensive borough-wide stop smoking service can be accessed in several ways, including by phone, email, GP or pharmacy referral, or self-referral.
Initially, the campaign will focus on Edmonton due to the high number of smokers who live in the area, but anyone living in the borough can refer themselves to the service.
Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Enfield Council, Cllr Alev Cazimoglu, said: “Enfield’s new stop smoking service will help to transform the lives of many in our community.
“The programme is not just about quitting smoking; it is about reclaiming healthier lives and brighter futures.
“The new service is free and is confidential and I would encourage residents to take advantage of the invaluable resources available. Together, we can continue to pave the way for a healthier Enfield.”
Residents will be helped to quit smoking in various ways including behavioural support, access to vapes, Nicotine Replacement Therapy, medication prescribed by a GP, and one-to-one, group and online sessions with trained advisors.
Grant funding from the government for SmokeFree Enfield will be received over five years, amounting to around £2 million in funding support.
Smoking is the greatest single preventable cause of health inequalities and premature deaths in Enfield, accounting for approximately 230 deaths a year. The estimated cost to the borough is £209m a year.
