Enfield Council is consulting residents until 25 February on how the building which formerly housed Enfield Highway library can be best used for the community’s benefit.
The building was designed by borough architect Richard Collins and built by Tottenham builders Henry Knight at a cost of £4,000. It was officially opened in 1910 and an enlarged lending library was added to the back of the building in 1938.
Library services were moved to the nearby business centre at the end of last year. The building itself is on the Local Heritage List for Enfield which means that it is considered a valuable historic asset for the borough and its uniqueness and must be taken into account..
Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services and Protection, Cllr Ayfer Orhan, said: “
The former Enfield Highway library building is a historic and much loved landmark and we think it is appropriate that it is used by the community now that it is no longer in use as a library. That is why we want residents to tell us what we should use the building for going forward and we’d love to hear the views of as many people as possible.
“We are committed to building strong communities which meet the needs of everyone who live in them and that means using all the resources at our disposal.”
