The biggest guided bicycle ride Enfield has ever seen will take place on Saturday 31 August, to showcase the growing network of cycle lanes in the borough.
The Family Cycle celebratory event will have several starting locations on both the A105 cycle lane and the newly completed A1010 South Scheme from Ponders End to Edmonton. All the guided rides will end at the Salmons Brook Cycle Path where Enfield Council will be hosting a number of free, fun activities.
The A1010 South Scheme has improved walking and cycling facilities along the route from Lincoln Road in Ponders End to Fairfield Road in Lower Edmonton.
The scheme will build on the success of the A105 route, officially opened in March 2018. There has been a 52 per cent increase in the number of cycling journeys along this stretch of road, compared with the number of trips made before the cycle lanes were constructed.
Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment & Sustainability, Cllr Guney Dogan, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to see the latest expansion of our ‘Healthy Streets’ and Cycle Enfield network and to find out for yourself how quick and easy it is to get from A to B.
“As well as showing the latest section of Enfield’s expanding cycle network, participants will be shown the wider benefits to individuals and the wider community of choosing alternative means of transport for short trips around the borough.”
The guided rides will be at a leisurely pace and for those who might not have been in the saddle for a while and the Cycle Confident team will be running cycling taster sessions at the British Alevi Federation at Churchfields Recreational Grounds. All participants will be treated to bicycle checks from ‘Dr Bike’ and anyone over 16 years old will also be given the opportunity to test ride the new Beryl Bikes from Enfield’s bike share scheme. Meanwhile face painting, games, food and refreshments will also be on offer and specially upcycled bicycles will be creating music and smoothies – all for free.
