Enfield Council is considering a proposal to link the exciting regeneration taking place at Ponders End with a cycling route through to Enfield Town.
Though still very much at the draft stage, the proposal forms part of a series of walking and cycling improvements, using quieter routes alongside major routes and creating a much needed east/west connection.
The original plans were for a cycle route to run along the full length of Southbury Road. However, in light of considerable feedback and to minimise disruption to the extensive bus routes along this stretch a new route is being considered.
Enfield Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said: “Enfield Council is committed to promoting a healthier more active Borough and to that end we continue to invest in improvements to encourage more walking and cycling.
“Ponders End has entered a period of significant regeneration and change, benefiting the lives of all those who live, work and study there. By providing accessible, active forms of travel will compliment the changes and help facilitate healthier lifestyles.
“Cycle Enfield was never about just one single route. With the funding provided by Transport for London, we are already beginning to see the formation of an interconnected network of routes across the borough.
“By connecting up our high streets, town centres, transport hubs and schools, our residents can make more active transport choices, particularly for their shorter journeys.”
The Council’s next steps are to develop some initial ideas from which the community will be invited to provide feedback to help shape the proposals. Design work will take place in 2019 and it is hoped that construction will start the year after, subject to approval.
Meanwhile, Transport for London will soon be coming forward with proposals for junction improvements to the A10 / Lincoln Road junction, while Enfield Council will be sharing designs for an improved ‘Nags Head’ junction, ahead of further consultation that will take place later in the year on the A1010 North project.
