Archaeology is the study of the past by examining physical evidence of past human activity. This is often used to describe evidence found below the ground.
Greater London Archaeology Advisory Service
The Greater London Archaeology Advisory Service (GLAAS), provides archaeological advice to Enfield. They aim to promote understanding and enjoyment of our archaeological heritage.
Greater London Historic Environment Record
The Greater London Historic Environment Record (GLHER) offers resources on London’s archaeology and historic built environment. It includes details on local archaeological sites, finds, historic buildings and landscapes.
All planning applications that might affect a heritage asset must consult the GLHER.
Archaeological Priority Areas
Archaeological Priority Areas (APAs) are regions of significant archaeological interest or potential for new discoveries. They help highlight where development might impact heritage assets.
Enfield’s APAs will be updated in collaboration with GLAAS in 2025.
Scheduled monuments
Scheduled monuments are archaeological sites considered to be of national importance by the Secretary of State. The National Heritage List for England hosts the record of all scheduled monuments. This is a publicly available, database of England’s protected heritage.
If you want to carry out work on a scheduled monument, you must apply for Scheduled Monument Consent from Historic England.
